| Rio De Janeiro is the place to go in South America. The "cidade maravilosa" -marvelous city- is stunning with many beautiful sceneries. Hills and green tropical forest surround the famous beaches Copacabana and Ipanema. The best view is from the "Corcovado", the Christ the Redeemer. You must also take the cable car to climb to the "sugar loaf" near the Guanabara Bay, visit the Tijuca forest and the botanical garden.
"Cariocas"-people from Rio- are very friendly. During the week end, the first thing do the "Cariocas" is to go to the beach. Beaches are beautiful and during week end and holidays crowded all the day. All the "garotas"-girls- wear the "tanga"-string-, and nobody will complain. People dance, play football, surf: the beach day is very happening.
During February come the best world known Carnival, it's the most awaited moment of the year for the Brazilians. During four days and four nights, Rio become the most happening city of the world. Only one type of music: Samba. People dance everywhere in the streets. There is two Carnivals: the one with the Samba schools held on the Sambodromo -one street with permanent public stands- they prepare it during one year and the street Carnival with all the "Cariocas" and tourists as well who participate in all the city. It's "hot" and crowded of people. The atmosphere is fantastic, it's an unbelievable moment.
As many places in South America, a particular attention must be taken by tourists to avoid to be stolen by the snatch thieves. I advice not to wear any jewelry and to keep your camera in your bag when not in use. But don't stress anymore, just be vigilant and you won't get problem. |

- Visit the Maracana football stadium - the capacity is around 180 000 spectators.

- The beaches: Copacabana, Ipanema, Barra da Tijuca.
- Drink a Caipirinha - local alcohol drink, cachaca + lemon.
